These answers explain how WattBill USA turns watts, time, and electricity prices into practical estimates—and where a simple calculator must stop.

How do I calculate appliance electricity cost?

Divide appliance watts by 1,000 to convert to kilowatts. Multiply by operating hours to get kWh, then multiply by the electricity price per kWh. For example, 1.5 kW × 5 hours × $0.17 equals about $1.28.

What is a kilowatt-hour?

A kilowatt-hour is a unit of energy. It equals 1,000 watts used for one hour. Utilities generally bill energy consumption in kWh.

Should I use the state average or my utility bill?

Use the energy price printed on your own bill when available. EIA state residential averages are useful for location comparisons or a first estimate, but individual utilities and rate plans differ.

How current are WattBill's state electricity rates?

The site retrieves monthly residential retail electricity prices from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and displays the reporting period. EIA data is stored in Cloudflare KV and refreshed automatically each month.

Does the estimate include taxes, fixed charges, and tiers?

No. The calculator estimates the variable energy charge. Customer charges, taxes, time-of-use pricing, tiered rates, demand charges, and other adjustments can change the final utility bill.

Why can actual use be lower than the appliance label?

A label may show maximum input power. Thermostats, compressors, heating elements, and variable-speed motors can cycle or modulate, reducing average power over time.

How should I calculate a refrigerator that is plugged in all day?

Use equivalent compressor hours rather than automatically entering 24 hours with running watts. An EnergyGuide annual-kWh figure is usually a better basis because it includes standardized cycling.

Can I use amps and volts instead of watts?

For a simple resistive load, watts are approximately volts × amps. Motors and electronic equipment can have power factor and efficiency effects, so use listed input watts or measured power when possible.

Does standby power matter?

A few watts can matter when a device remains connected all year. Multiply the standby watts by 24 hours and 365 days to see the annual effect.

How do I compare multiple appliances?

Enter the first appliance, name it, and choose “Add to comparison.” Repeat for other appliances or operating scenarios. The comparison table uses the current electricity rate for each added item.

What does the share link contain?

The link stores calculator numbers, selected state code, and comparison rows in the URL. It does not contain an account, identity, or utility bill.

Can WattBill predict my complete electric bill?

No. It estimates specific appliance energy costs. A complete bill depends on every household load plus the utility's rate structure and fixed charges.
